Ensuring your children are safe online is more important than ever. Fortunately, there are many internet safety tools that will allow you to protect your children. Read on for helpful background and tools that will equip you as a parent.

Why do we need to keep kids safe online?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, screen time for children jumped with kids learning at home, virtual socializing, and even as an intentional distraction while parents scramble to find ways to keep kids busy as they work from home.

But the additional screen time creates additional risk. It’s reported by the Organization for Social Media Saftey that 82% of child sex crimes originate from social media sites. And the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received over 10 million CyberTipline reports of suspected online child enticement and exploitation in 2017 alone. A number that continues to rise exponentially.

Unfortunately, human trafficking and abuse issues remain a problem because traffickers and abusers can and do operate virtually. What is alarming is that the demand for cybersex has not waned, but increased during this time. In late March 2020, the FBI issued a warning: “Due to school closings as a result of COVID-19, children will potentially have an increased online presence and/or be in a position that puts them at an inadvertent risk. Due to this newly developing environment, the FBI is seeking to warn parents, educators, caregivers, and children about the dangers of online sexual exploitation and signs of child abuse.”

The good news is that keeping your kids safe online is definitely possible, and there are some powerful tools available literally at your fingertips. Whatever you decide to use, it’s important to remember that nothing can replace conversations you should have with your children and teens about the need to include safe practices online and the dangers of predators, disturbing content, and porn.

At the same time, it’s important to remember to be a safe place for your children to come to, in case they do encounter a problem online. If they believe they will get in trouble for seeing something, they will keep it secret and the damage can snowball. A family technology contract is strongly advised — and it also happens to be a great starting point for that first conversation.
