Choosing a human trafficking nonprofit whose mission speaks to you

Wondering where to donate to companies fighting human trafficking in the U.S. and around the world? With so many organizations out there, each adopting a slightly different approach to fighting human trafficking, choosing the right one that fits your personal passion can seem like a challenging task.

Whether you’re most interested in helping prevent people from entering the cycle of human trafficking, intervening on behalf of people who are currently trafficked, or providing support and care for trafficking survivors, read on to discover how The Exodus Road supports each area and which other human trafficking nonprofits are right for you to donate to and support. Each one has a high level of financial transparency and a proven record of success.

Organizations preventing human trafficking

International Justice Mission is one of the largest and longest-running organizations fighting human trafficking through policy change and training. IJM looks at the bigger picture, working to dismantle the system of human trafficking itself. In many contexts, police, judges, and officials are ill-equipped to enforce anti-human trafficking laws. IJM’s lawyers train local leaders and law enforcers to respond to this crime.

If enacting change through policy-making and training appeals to you, consider supporting IJM’s mission to put an end to modern-day slavery.

Love Justice International helps intercept potential victims of human trafficking as they cross borders. By monitoring strategic transit points, LJI identifies trafficking networks to stop trafficking as it occurs. To date, they’ve intercepted over 100,000 individuals and helped authorities arrest over 2,000 suspects.

If you care about stopping human trafficking before vulnerable people are exploited, Love Justice International is a great choice.

The Exodus Road’s prevention education training includes both law enforcement and vulnerable citizens. Through programs like TraffickWatch Brazil, The Exodus Road has trained thousands of law enforcement officers to better recognize and respond to human trafficking crime, leading to hundreds of perpetrators arrested and hundreds more survivors of trafficking freed.

As an organization, The Exodus Road is also deeply committed to training ordinary people to recognize the signs of exploitation to stop trafficking before it starts. That happens through in-person events at schools in Thailand through Equip & Empower. In the United States, kids and caregivers can learn about digital dangers and preventing online exploitation through Influenced trainings both in person and online.

Organizations offering human trafficking investigation

The Exodus Road is an expert in intervening to liberate individuals who are currently trapped in human trafficking. They train local investigators to identify victims of human trafficking, gather evidence to build effective cases for law enforcement, and support law enforcement in operations to free those currently trapped. They’ve helped free more than 6,000 women and children from sex trafficking and aided in the arrest of nearly 2,000 traffickers.

Blue Dragon is an organization based in Vietnam that works to free vulnerable people trapped in exploitation in Asia. Recently, they have become particularly involved in investigating the massive scamming compounds that have become major players in trafficking throughout Cambodia and Myanmar.

Blue Dragon is also deeply involved in serving kids who are living on the streets, recognizing that without early intervention, many of these kids will ultimately be trafficked.

Organizations providing human trafficking aftercare

Rapha International has campuses in Thailand, Cambodia, and Haiti, providing safe places for those healing from abuse and exploitation. Their staff of trained experts from the local community provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care to give survivors a chance to reclaim their lost childhood.

In addition to their quality residential aftercare services, Rapha offers community-based education and prevention programming as well.

Free the Girls is another organization doing amazing work for survivors of human trafficking. They help survivors of human trafficking start their own businesses selling bras in local markets. A safe, sustainable form of employment enables these survivors to transition from oppression to leading a life of true freedom. Currently, they primarily operate in Mexico.

If you’d like to help survivors gain economic stability, check out Free the Girls.

The Exodus Road provides aftercare both through our residential safehouse Freedom Home in Thailand, through expert social workers in India and Latin America, and through key aftercare partners in other countries of operation.

At Freedom Home in Thailand, adolescent and young women survivors of sex trafficking receive holistic residential care that includes trauma therapy, medical care, housing, food, job placement, and education. Our staff continues to follow up with survivors in their communities for two years to ensure their needs are being met, including offering emotional support through court cases.

In India and Latin America, through trained, dedicated social workers, The Exodus Road offers both immediate crisis support during the moment of intervention in countries and long-term follow-up care through counseling and practical support.

Safe House Project is a U.S.-based provider of aftercare, case management, and referrals, as well as recently taking on the operation of the National Human Trafficking Hotline. In addition to directly supporting a number of survivors annually, they certify and train other aftercare programs throughout the United States in a network that includes over 600 beds.

If you want to support an organization that is directly supporting survivors who may be in your own community, Safe House Project may be a good place to start.

Region-Specific Human Trafficking Nonprofits to Donate To

Want to help organizations working in regions that you care about most? Here are a few we recommend!

Prevention in the USA

The Polaris Project is at the forefront of tackling the underlying system that perpetrates human-trafficking in the USA. Through its operation of the US national human trafficking hotline, The Polaris Project gathers key data on how trafficking operations work in the US and provides crisis response for trafficking tips.

Influenced, a project of The Exodus Road, is revolutionizing the conversation about online exploitation. This is the fastest-growing crime against children, and often overlaps with or precedes human trafficking. Influenced addresses the issue through education about risks like sextortion, CSAM, and grooming, while providing compassionate and commonsense action steps that parents, caregivers, and kids can take right now to cocreate safer communities.

Prevention and Intervention in Brazil

Meninadança runs an intervention program for young Brazilian girls who are forced to sell their bodies along Brazil’s “corridor of prostitution,” the BR-116 motorway. Their Pink Houses serve as safe, all-female environments where survivors can develop the relationships and confidence to live free of fear. Check out this podcast to hear Meninadança founder, Matt Roper, speak about how they use dance to get children off the streets!

Prevention and Aftercare in Cambodia

Agape International Mission implements both prevention and aftercare programming in Cambodia. Cambodia is a central hub for human trafficking, with a history of child sex trafficking and 261,000 people currently living in conditions of modern slavery. Your support for AIM’s programs in Cambodia can have a major impact.

All of these trusted human trafficking nonprofits are doing amazing work in the global fight to end human trafficking. Everyone has a role to play in freedom, and it’s the support of you, the ordinary heroes, that can change the lives of so many at-risk men, women, and children.

Whichever human trafficking nonprofit you choose, your support will make a significant difference!
