This 12-year-old girl failed a class in school one day in her home village in Bangladesh. Tania knew her parents. She had reason to fear their explosive and abusive rage if they found out she had failed.
Desperate and ashamed of her failure, she asked a woman she barely knew for help. The woman told Tania that she had an easy solution. Stealthily, the adult snuck Tania away from home and into India. They arrived in a bustling city that served as the hub for the local region.
But where Tania expected to find shelter from her parents’ anger, instead, she found horror she never could have imagined. The women brought her to two men, also from Bangladesh, who locked Tania in a hotel room. A steady stream of men began to arrive and assault her, marring her innocence one visit at a time.
This went on for three months. Four other adult women were also being trafficked by the same group, feeling helpless to escape.

That’s where The Exodus Road’s India team intervened.
Working closely with law enforcement, they gathered information on Tania and the other women who were being trafficked with her. They arrived at the hotel, initially finding Tania and one other 20-year-old woman.
Tania had been brutally physically abused and drugged. She was confused by the police’s presence, crying and afraid.
But The Exodus Road, working with another NGO, was able to ensure that Tania was brought to a safehouse where she could receive medical care and emotional comfort as she began to heal.
Meanwhile, police continued to pursue the case. Within days, they had arrested a total of four traffickers and freed four adult women in addition to Tania.
