3 women were freed from a trafficker who sold them on the side of a road in India Skip to main content

The roadside itself was unremarkable: just another street leading into a city in India. But for the three women being sold there, their lives had been constricted until their reality was confined to the road. Any other movement was strictly limited.

A fourth woman was trafficking these individuals from her community on the outskirts of town, selling them to paying customers who would take them into the city to abuse them. The woman had posed as their friend, as someone safe. Instead, she had become the channel for nightmarish exploitation.

A vibrant street scene unfolds under the clear daylight in Jaipur, India. Ornate, historic buildings form the backdrop to the everyday bustle. Visible are numerous cars, motorcycles, and buses navigating the crowded roads. Many people walk along the sidewalks and crosswalks. The architecture showcases a mix of traditional designs and textures. The lighting conditions create a warm atmosphere enhancing the overall feel of the city. The scene could be useful in projects relating to travel, urban life, cityscapes, and transportation.

Local law enforcement received a tip about the crime harming these women. They reached out to The Exodus Road’s team of investigators for help building evidence that would offer a clear case.

We went to work.

On the day when all of the evidence was collected and law enforcement showed up to remove the trafficking survivors and arrest the perpetrator, the women were scared and concerned. They’d trusted someone before, and that trust was what had landed them beside this road and all it represented in the first place. How could they trust anything or anyone again?

Fortunately, our team was able to help reassure them of their safety. The three women were transferred into government aftercare, where they can heal from the immense trauma that they have endured.

Their false friend who trafficked them is now in police custody. She will face jail time and a steep fine in court.

Expanding the options for survivors beyond the narrow path of exploitation is only possible with your support. Thank you for helping us provide freedom for these survivors!
