Karaoke bars, often known as KTVs, are ubiquitous in Thailand. Often ringed by the chaotic visual sparkle of Christmas lights, these bars serve drinks and give patrons the chance to use either public karaoke machines or private karaoke rooms. They might also hold other entertainment, like dancing and themed nights — and sometimes, they serve as fronts for the sale of sexual services to tourists.

Local law enforcement became aware of two different karaoke bars in Northern Thailand that held warning signs of underage girls being trafficked for sex. They asked The Exodus Road’s team to investigate further.

When investigators went undercover to explore the two karaoke bars, they quickly discovered eight Thai teenage girls being sold for sex by the establishment, a clear case of trafficking. By Thai and international law standards, any minor being sold for sex is, by definition, a victim of human trafficking. In addition to the minors, a young woman from Laos was also discovered. Our team captured all of the evidence they needed and brought it back to the police.

When law enforcement raided the bars, one at a time, they were there to free the girls and arrest two perpetrators. However, The Exodus Road’s team was also present, ready to support the survivors and be a gentle, caring presence to help transition them into aftercare services. Our social workers helped the young woman from Laos with repatriation. We will continue to follow up with the teenage girls through their upcoming court cases, where the arrested perpetrators are facing criminal charges for their actions.

Meanwhile, both karaoke bars have been shut down for good. This sends a message to other KTV owners: it’s unacceptable to exploit girls as part of a night’s entertainment.

You reinforce that same message through your support of The Exodus Road. Thank you!
