A handful of women were freed from a webcam trafficking operation in a residential neighborhood

Trafficking only looks like trafficking if you know what to look for. 

From the outside, just a few snapshots of life could be glimpsed through the windowpanes: mattresses on the floor. Clothes and blankets, haphazardly strewn across the space. An eerie quiet during the dozen or more hours each day when the room’s occupants were gone.

That’s part of how The Exodus Road’s global teams began to guess that it’s where a handful of women experiencing trafficking via webcam were being held.

Every day, closely watched by guards who abused them to keep them in line, the small group of women would be brought from their limited living space to the “studio” in the same residential neighborhood where their traffickers required them to work. There, they were forced to stream violating content for their exploiters’ profit. 

Shifts were painfully long and physically degrading. The women ranged in age from middle-aged to just a kid — the youngest was in her mid-teens. One of them wasn’t even from the same Latin American country where they were being trafficked online. But they were all united in their experience of horrific abuse, abuse that left their spirits increasingly, visibly crushed.

No amount of exhaustion or suffering was enough to allow the traffickers to give them a chance at rest or the hope of escape.

So when law enforcement officials arrived, supported by The Exodus Road’s team, the survivors were in shock. They didn’t believe anyone was coming for them. They’d long ago given up hope.

The Exodus Road’s team members immediately offered the women and girl food and water, tangible support and expressions of safety. The survivors were placed in government protection, where they can begin to mend their shattered lives.

The two ringleaders of the operation were arrested. Without their guidance, the trafficking operation cannot continue.
